What is a Fretboard Note Trainer?

How does the fretboard note trainer work?
Each fret raises a string's pitch by one semitone. Starting from the open-string note you enter, the tool counts up the chromatic scale by the number of frets to find the note sounding there, and works out how many full octaves above the open string that is. Twelve frets is exactly one octave, so the note repeats at the 12th fret an octave higher.
What are the standard open-string notes?
In standard tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, the open strings are E, A, D, G, B, and E. Enter any of these — or the open note of whatever tuning you use — as the starting point, and the tool handles the rest.
Why are notes shown with sharps instead of flats?
The tool uses a single consistent chromatic spelling with sharps (C, C#, D, D#, and so on) so every fret has one clear name. In real music the same pitch may be written as a flat depending on the key — A# and B flat are the same note — but sharp spelling keeps the fretboard map unambiguous while you're learning positions.
